Hi guys. For ubuntu 12.04 Quantal Quetzal I think this design works like logo.
The Quetzal it is the national bird of Guatemala, "The resplendent Quetzal".
This bird have his chest of color red and in the culture Maya means nobility. For this reason in this design the logo of Ubuntu simulate his chest and have red color in the background, thats means the chest of Quetzal.
In the case of the "head the bird" this look to the sky symbolizing freedom.
